Before it was West Bridgewater...
It belonged to the Wampanoag tribe of Massachusetts led by Massasoit. After the settlement of Marshfield was established in the northern part of Duxbury in 1642, the settlers in Duxbury decided to petition for more land to compensate for the loss of the township's land area. Subsequently, Myles Standish, John Rogers and others were sent to negotiate the purchase from the Wampanoags. On March 23rd, 1649, Chief Massasoit signed the deed with Captain Standish, John Rogers, Constant Southworth and William Brett, witnessed by a John Bradford and William Parker. The Bridgewaters were bought, and incorporated as a single township.
